L. P. Phil Leibowitz Jr.

Photo of Phil LeibowitzPhil returned to Temple on July 1,1977 to pursue a new career in the insurance business and established Leibowitz and Associates. At that time his main company affiliation was with Knights of Columbus as an agency field representative. His territory covered a fifty mile area excluding Waco where he sold life, health and retirement plans to members of the organization, but with this territory he had a very limited market. After a short time, Mr. Phil got licensed and sold to the general public.
In 1986 Leibowitz and Associates purchased Temple Insurance, an established agency that had gone bankrupt.  He then continued to build up his company by acquiring more company representation.  In an eleven year period he led Leibowitz and Associates to acquire three more agencies including Law, Hendrick & Kelly (1990), Goodwin-Bumpus Insurance (1993) and Killeen Insurance (1993). Their last year in business, the company’s gross was around $15 million in revenue and $2 million in gross income.  Within a two year period they had three banks approach them to purchase the agency (1999-2001). In 2001, they sold out to Extraco Banks after their second approach.
Temple Insurance agency enjoyed writing business all over the state of Texas (65% commercial and 35% personal). They had a number of niche markets including insurance coverage for:
•    County governments, school districts, hospitals, cities & water improvement districts.
•    Emergency services such as volunteer fire departments and ambulance services.
•    The construction industry with insurance and bonding and were fortunate to win the bid to write the builders risk coverage for the Texas State Capitol renovation project ($200 Million).
•    Manufacturing industry.
•    Main street business.
Mr. Leibowitz was employed by Extraco for two years after selling out. He went into retirement, but still occasionally wrote individual life & health policies and did some consulting work.
He has had the pleasure of being involved in the communities where he has resided through the following affiliations:
•    Member of the Knights of Columbus and received a 40 year service pin in March of 2009.
•    Served with Local K of C as an officer working way up to being a Grand Knight and attained 4th Degree honors in 1973.
•    Served as Faithful Navigator Assembly 1138 Temple 2005-2007.
•    Currently serving 3rd two year term with Texas State Family in State Charities.
•    Selected as Outstanding Young Man of the Year 1972 Bay City, Texas Jaycees.
•    Charter Member Temple Rotary South.
•    Served as President 1985-86. Had 23 years perfect attendance.
•    Served on Temple Community Block Grant Committee, Zoning Board of Adjustments and Temple Civil Service Commission both as a member and chairman of these boards.
•    Served on Parish Council & Finance Board of St Luke Catholic Church where he has been a member for 37 years.
